Periodontics is a branch of dentistry that deals with the diseases of the gums and other structures supporting and surrounding the teeth. Many people in the world suffer from gum diseases. A periodontal disease results in damage to bone and soft tissue that support teeth. The condition of your gums and teeth all depends upon how well you take care of them after you have detected a periodontal disease.

What causes this problem?

We all know that our mouths carry the highest number of bacteria. They along with other particles and mucus, form a colorless and sticky plaque on the teeth. If the plaque is not removed timely, it can for tartar which can’t be done away with brushing. If tartar or plaque is not dealt with immediately, it can lead to gingivitis, which is gum disease. If it is not treated on time, it advances to periodontal disease. In this condition, the gums pull away from the teeth and form spaces. If not treated, the gums, bones and tissue supporting the teeth damage, causing teeth to become loose due to which they eventually have to be removed.

Some of the common symptoms of gum disease are –

  • Prolonged bad breath
  • Painful chewing
  • Swollen or red gums
  • Bleeding gums
  • Loose teeth
  • Decreasing gums
  • Longer appearing teeth
  • Sensitive teeth

As soon as you detect any of the problems, you must immediately pay a visit to your oral care provider. The more you delay, greater are the chances of this condition to aggravate. In worse cases, teeth have to be removed. In order to prevent periodontal disease, is to visit your dentist once every 6 months for professional cleanings, alongside brushing and flossing each day. Such practices will keep your teeth and gums healthy.

This problem can often be treated successfully. The steps to periodontal treatment include non-surgical treatment, pocket reduction procedures, laser treatment, regenerative procedures, dental implants, dental crown lengthening, gum graft surgery, and plastic surgery procedures. The very first non-surgical step involves scaling and root planning (which are types of special cleaning) that help in removing plaque and tartar deposits. In cases where the condition is worsening, your gums may need surgery so as to completely eliminate the accumulated tartar and plaque from your teeth.

Periodontal treatment always saves you from further witnessing bad or loosing teeth. All you need to do to keep periodontal disease at bay is to brush and floss each day, avoid tobacco, eat a balanced diet and visit your dentist for regular checks.
