Interesting Facts You Didn’t Know About Your Teeth

February 28th, 2017|

Everyone knows that teeth serve an extremely essential role in your body, processing all the food that you eat. However, we’ve compiled a list of other things that you probably don’t know about your teeth. Our fun facts below will give you some reasons to appreciate your teeth even more — and hopefully, encourage you to make sure you’re looking after them properly!

Your teeth are unique

Have you ever watched a police procedural TV show and wondered why the investigators often demand dental prints? That’s because teeth are just like fingerprints — everyone’s teeth are different, even identical twins.

We will spend 79 days brushing our teeth over the course of one lifetime

This is, of course, assuming that you follow the recommendation by dentists of spending 4 minutes in the morning and at night brushing your teeth every day. Which we know you definitely are.

Enamel is the hardest part of your body

Enamel, the coating of your teeth, is the hardest substance that can be found in the human body (but this does NOT mean that it is alright to use your teeth for opening bottle caps). While this may be a surprise, it makes sense once you think about how much work your teeth have to do each day! Enamel protects your teeth and helps to prevent it from rotting and decay, and is a barrier against the effects of plaque and acids on the inner layers of your teeth… So be sure to take good care of them!

We produce more than 20,000 litres of saliva in a lifetime

The average person produces around 262 litres of saliva a year. However, if you spend most of your free time looking at pictures of food on Instagram, that number could easily be at least ten times higher.

Not all teeth are made equal

Did you know that we have 4 different types of teeth? They all serve different functions too. There’s the incisors, right in the front and centre, that are meant for biting food and are essential when it comes to the pronunciation of words. Then there are your canines, the sharpest teeth that helps you to tear food apart. Your premolars and molars make up the rest of your teeth, and are used for chewing and grinding food. There’s a total of 32 teeth in your mouth, and each and every one of them require proper care.
