Five Tips for Keeping Teeth and Gums Healthy

February 13th, 2016|
Dr Himakshu Vyas

Healthy teeth and gums are a sign of a healthy lifestyle. To maintain the health of your teeth and to prevent oral health problems that may arise as a consequence of poor cleaning and personal care habits,  consider revisiting your daily dental hygiene routine and making sure to include these tips.

1) Brush Twice Daily

To keep teeth from succumbing to the bacteria that tends to sit on their surface as a result of eating, drinking, and daily living, make a commitment to brush your teeth morning and night using proper technique. By brushing gently and thoroughly on the front, back, and surface of each tooth, you will scrub away a host of germs that can otherwise cause an increased build-up of plaque and encourage tooth decay.

2) Eat a Healthy Diet

Just as a healthy diet promotes a healthy body, it promotes healthy teeth and gums. Health begins on the inside of the body. The condition of the teeth and gums reveal much information about an individual’s internal health. Getting essential nutrients from your diet on a daily basis will help to maintain the health of your teeth and gums.

3) Get Regular Cleanings and Check-ups

Over time, a build-up of plaque begins to form on the teeth. To remove this build-up and to check that no other dental problems have arisen, regular visits to the dentist’s office are required. You might find that maintaining a regular cleaning schedule also keeps you accountable to maintaining your dental hygiene on your own time.

4) Limit Sugary Foods and Beverages

Sugary foods and beverages such as candy, soda, desserts, and sugary fruit juices provide sustenance for the kind of bacteria that produce acids which can damage the teeth over time. By limiting these foods, you can help keep your teeth strong and healthy for many years.

5) Floss Daily

In addition to brushing teeth twice daily, a proper dental hygiene routine includes daily flossing. By sliding floss up and down between each set of teeth, you remove food particles and germs that tend to get caught between the teeth and gums.

Starting early will ensure that your teeth are given a fighting chance to remain healthy throughout your life. By taking hold of your dental healthy using these five tips, you can be more confidet that your teeth will continue to serve you well for many years.
