Are Cosmetic Dental Veneers a Good Choice for You

October 17th, 2013|

Dental veneers are a form of cosmetic dentistry usually used for improving the aesthetics of your front teeth. They are suggested for chipped, broken or misaligned teeth or for extensive discoloration due to the use of certain drugs. Since the procedure is elective and the veneers eventually (after 5-10 years) need to be replaced, it is essential that you understand the benefits and risks involved and any alternative treatment methods which could be chosen.

Why choose veneers?

Cosmetic bonding and dental crowns are the alternatives to veneers, but all three have their specific purposes. Our team of Townsville dentists are on hand to evaluate your case and help you to decide which one will be right for you.

There are several benefits when you choose veneers.

• Veneers require less shaping than crowns do and removes less of the original tooth. The invasive preparation done for crowns makes them a less ideal choice for aesthetic improvement.

• Porcelain veneers do not stain easily and they feel more like natural teeth to the gum tissue. Resin bonding is prone to discolouration and wearing down.

• By choosing the correct colour for veneers, dark teeth can be made to look whiter.

• They do not require much special care, especially for those who follow good oral hygiene.

• They are less expensive than fitting full coverage dental crowns.

What are the risks involved?

Like any other cosmetic dentistry procedure, there are certain risks, and we are only too pleased to go through any of these that may relate to you.

• It is not a reversible process, once you start using them, you cannot stop.

• If the veneers chip or crack, they have to be replaced. If you have sleep or awake bruxism (clenching and grinding teeth), veneers will not be the right choice for you.

• Some enamel is removed, so you might have increased sensitivity to hot and cold foods. Hence, veneers are not usually offered to people having less enamel on their tooth surface.

• Once in place, the colour of the veneer cannot be changed. So any whitening must be done before the veneer is put in.

• Veneers do not protect against tooth decay. If tooth decay occurs, the veneer will have to be removed and treatment undertaken – a crown may then be required. So people prone to tooth decay or who have untreated gum disease are not good candidates for this procedure.

Dentists at our Townsville Dental Centre experience in dental veneer technology and have sophisticated instruments to ensure long-lasting results.
