Easing dental phobia

July 28th, 2014|

Dental phobia simply refers to the fear of the oral care provider or receiving any kind of dental care and treatment. A person may experience acute anxiety attacks, panic attacks and mild uneasiness. Generally this develops from childhood where an individual might have gone through some traumatic experiences that have left them with feelings of anxiety from visiting the oral care provider. It reinforces their negative view on the oral care provider that prevents them from going for regular checkups leaving their teeth in a bad shape. Some people even develop this phobia by the thought of needles or even the sound of the drill.
We have rounded up some common things that prevent people from going to the oral care provider:

• Some people suffer from extreme needle phobia. The sight of the needle makes them anxious or nervous. Nowadays there is a wide range of techniques and tips that considerably helps to reduce discomfort for an individual. Needles that are used by oral care provider now are incredibly fine and pain free.

• The thought of pain in the mouth often causes anxiety and distress in many people. The scariest part of a dental visit for many people is having sharp, strange metal tools in their mouth. Holding the tools first seems to ease some levels of stress and fear.

• Feeling of being gagged or choked can also be a result of dental phobia in many people. It is also very common in the general population. Some even find it very difficult to place a spoon or fork in their mouth, making them unable to either swallow or breathe. Topical anesthetic sprays or intravenous sedation can be used for a comfortable and safe dental treatment if required.

• The most common cause for fear of oral care provider is a negative experience during earlier dental visits. Any kind of negative or a painful experience during dental treatments and even psychological behaviors like humiliation can result in the fear for oral care provider.

The more you visit the oral care provider the more it becomes easier to cope with the fear of oral care provider. It is necessary to find an oral care provider that you are comfortable with to establish a trusting relationship. Informing the oral care provider about your fears can help them determine the best ways to manage and address those fears. Our first priority is to provide a comfortable experience for the patients who suffer from extreme dental phobia. Satisfaction of our patients is our primary concern. Our goal is to provide you dental care that is free from pain, anxiety or any kind of fear.
