Impacted Third Molars: Symptoms And Extraction

February 19th, 2014|

Old wives’ tales have it that people start growing wisdom teeth the moment they become old and mature enough to step into adulthood.

Modern dentistry, on the other hand, tells of an entirely different story.

Often referred to as third molars, your wisdom teeth are the last set of teeth to come into the mouth. This extra set of teeth typically develops during your teenage years until young adulthood.

While not everybody suffers through dental pain when their third molars grow in, most people are advised by their dental experts to have their wisdom teeth removed to avoid unnecessary dental problems.

Impacted Third Molars

Wisdom teeth are a set of molars that normally grows at the very back of your mouth.  When third molars are to able emerge and grow properly at a properly angle, these teeth allow you to chew food more easily. Most wisdom teeth, however, erupt through the gingiva without enough space that allows them to fully emerge through the gum line and grow in properly. Often misaligned, these are often called impacted third molars, or impacted wisdom teeth.

Impacted wisdom teeth often cause dental pain and periodontal infections. These third molars often grow in misaligned and crooked. As such, they very often crowd nearby and surrounding teeth. When a third molar becomes impacted, it often causes painful dental complications.

Wisdom Teeth Extraction

The most common course of treatment in relieving dental complications caused by the growth of wisdom teeth is extraction. Extraction most commonly takes place in a dentist of oral surgeon’s office. Wisdom teeth that have already erupted through the gum line can be removed as easily as other teeth. Impacted wisdom teeth, on the other hand, may require a trickier procedure.

In the case of an impacted wisdom tooth, an incision is made through the gums. Then, your dentist Townsville or oral surgeon proceeds to remove any bone that covers the tooth. It is only after this that the wisdom tooth is cut into several fractions before it is removed.
