Sedation Dentistry refers to that particular part of a dental procedure in which the patient is given a dose of sedatives to calm her/him down during dental procedures. These Sedatives have a calming effect on the nervous system, especially on the areas which are responsible for consciousness. Sedation Dentistry is most beneficial for those people who get scared at the mere mention of a dentist and for those who have very sensitive teeth and gums.

Levels Of Sedation: There are three levels of Sedation depending up on the kind of treatment which the patient is undergoing.
· Deep Sedation: This is given if the patient is undergoing a complex treatment and is unable to bear the pain.
· Moderate Sedation: This keeps the patients in moderate consciousness during the dental treatment.
· Minimal Sedation: This is given to produce a soothing effect on the patients.

Kinds of Sedatives Administered During Dental Procedures:
· Oral Sedatives- The patient is given a pill which makes him/her drowsy during the dental procedure. This is a comparatively easier way of giving sedatives.
· Intravenous Sedatives- Sedatives that are directly introduced into the blood system are called Intravenous Sedatives. These sedatives have a relaxing effect on the patient & do not render him/her unconscious.
· General Anesthesia- Those who are undergoing root extraction or surgeries of some kind are given certain drugs which make them completely unconscious during the entire surgical procedure. This procedure is also referred to as Deep sedation.
· Topical Anesthesia- Topical Anesthesia refers to the use of special sedatives or injections to render an affected part numb. With Topical Anesthesia. Dentist can easily carry out the required dental procedure or surgery.
· Laughing Gas- Nitrous Oxide, also called Laughing Gas is sometimes used to calm down patients during dental visits.

Sedation Dentistry is slowly becoming very popular. It enables people to have smooth and painless dental checkups. It is most suited for:
· Young children who are restless and can be tough to control during dental checkups.
· Patients suffering from some other diseases such as cerebral palsy.
· Patients who have a phobia of doctors.
· Patients who have to undergo time consuming and painful dental procedures.

Sedation Dentistry enables dentists to deal with the affected areas of the patients’ mouth effectively, thus they can complete the entire dental procedure in lesser sittings. Smile Dentist Townsville has proved to be a boon for people who avoid visiting dental doctors for fear of pain and so end up aggravating their own ailments.
