What’s the Use in Regular Check-Ups?
Just like with other health matters, oral hygiene should be regularly monitored between you and a trained professional. But for some, it’s not always a priority.
Maybe that bimonthly check-up is a bit of a luxury for you. Perhaps you’re saving your money for something you deem a little more important. But in fact, regular check-ups with your dentist are more than just best practice, and regular self-cleaning paired with check-ups, at least twice yearly, can go a long way to fighting off a slew of possible diseases and invasive surgeries down the track. In this blog, we outline the reasons why visiting your dentist regularly is beneficial.
Getting to know your dentist, and vice versa
You may not love them, but becoming familiar with your dentist is important, as they can in turn become familiar with your oral history. Most professionals can detect alarming signs in the mouth, but when your dentist has a record of your previous procedures or issues, they can tailor their examinations to better serve your particular situation. This can then lead to improved detection of oral illnesses and a more thorough schedule for hygiene maintenance in the future.
Early detection of harmful diseases
We’re regularly tempted by an array of delicious foods, acidic fruits and processed sugars, and with ingredients not always known to us, we are never really sure what damage is being done to our oral hygiene.
By visiting your dentist on a regular basis, you can have a professional inspect the condition of your teeth and gums before any issues have a chance to settle in. They’ll also be able to advise whether you may need to steer clear of the sweets to avoid issues worsening.
Illnesses like oral cancer and gum disease can be extremely aggressive and unpleasant. But they do have warning signs. Regular dental checks are crucial for prevention or early detection of any cancers, as it will boost your chances of curability. And even with more minor ailments, you will be saving yourself a penny on a series of extreme dental surgeries.
Nothing beats a professional clean
Unfortunately, brushing and flossing twice a day isn’t enough for squeaky clean gums and teeth. The professional cleaning received by a dentist includes the use of specialised equipment that is not available at home, and is designed to keep the innards of the mouth as healthy as possible. Your standard toothbrush may remove some of the plaque and bacteria built up over the day, but a professional clean can remove hard and soft collections before it solidifies into calculus (hardened plaque). It may be uncomfortable, but the difference a dentist’s clean makes is a huge plus.
