5 Tips for Taking Care of Your Veneers
Dental veneers are a procedure that involves bonding a thin porcelain layer onto a tooth. The substance mimics the appearance, colour and shape of teeth, and usually is given to those who are unhappy with their natural tooth shape, whether that be gaps, yellowing or smaller shaped.
The great thing about dental veneers is that you can continue eating the same foods as you normally would, without them changing colour. Veneers are a long-lasting fix for those looking for straighter, whiter teeth. However, they do need to be taken care of. To ensure your veneers last as long as possible, stay looking great and don’t affect your natural teeth, keep in mind these few upkeep tips.
Maintain proper and regular oral care
Just like your natural teeth, veneers require regular oral hygiene, including flossing and brushing twice a day. This will help them looking great, but it’s also important for the tooth behind your veneer. Small exposed areas can be susceptible to decay if daily flossing isn’t added into your regime, so make sure you’re taking twice as much care after the procedure.
Don’t bite into tough foods or objects
Your veneers are slightly more delicate than your natural teeth, as they are stuck with an adhesive. While you can enjoy all types of foods without staining your new veneers, you should still avoid chewing on tough foods, or objects. Foods like apples and hard lollies can loosen your teeth, so cut up tough food into bite size pieces. Tearing and biting into packages also shouldn’t be an option anymore.
Avoid alcoholic mouthwashes
Alcohol can soften the bonding of your veneers, so an alcoholic mouthwash will mean they’ll fall out sooner than you expect. Instead, opt for an alcohol-free mouth wash, and drink with a straw when you are having the occasional alcoholic drink.
Avoid acidic foods and drinks
While the porcelain used to create veneers is stain resistant, the adhesive is not. This means, certain foods can cause the corners and edges of the veneer to look yellow or discoloured. Use a straw when drinking soft drinks or coffees that cause staining, but this can also be prevented with regular brushing and flossing.
Get regular check-ups for polishing
Visit a cosmetic dentist once every three months for a polishing treatment. This will ensure that your veneers are thoroughly cleaned. Combine this with your regular daily routine to keep your veneers in great condition.
